from the lending
library
C. A. Reiser, M.S.
When the Lending Library began, it was a challenge
to find resources specific to stillbirth. With an
increasing awareness of the magnitude of stillbirth as a
perinatal issue, there has been a parallel increase in
the availability of written resources for parents and for
their care providers. Now the challenge is to ensure that
our library acquires new listings as they become
available. Certainly part of that challenge relates to
finding monies to purchase the materials (any
suggestions?), but also part of the challenge is source
where can we find out whats new? It is this
question that we address here where are the best
sources for locating new bereavement materials?
Catalog Resources
Centering Corporation
Aptly calling themselves "Your Grief Resource
Center," the Centering Corporation sells hundreds of
publications on almost all aspects of grief. While they
offer the widest selection of resources that I am aware
of pertaining to pregnancy loss and other pregnancy
complications, they also have materials for other
situations associated with grief, including mothers
releasing babies for adoption, special care infants,
illness and disability, suicide, death of pets and others.
Some publications are written specifically by or for
Centering Corporation; others in the catalog come from
other publishing houses and authors.

A Place to Remember
This division of deRuyter-Nelson Publications has
materials specifically and solely for "those who
have been touched by a crisis in pregnancy or the death
of a baby."
Publications offered cover a wide range of topics,
including for fathers, grandparents and siblings, to
thinking about the future and next pregnancies. In
addition to written resources, other items include
Keepsake and Memory boxes, Announcement/Sympathy cards,
certificates of Baptism, Dedication, etc.

Rainbow Connection Compassion Books
This is the official book service of the Association
for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC). They are
included here not so much for their pregnancy loss
offerings (their childbirth and infant loss section
includes only 14 titles), but rather because of the scope
of their other offerings. Their current catalog contains
over 400 books, audios and visuals for parents and
professionals. If you are having trouble finding
something specific to help you in your work as a
caregiver, you may want to look here. For example, there
are several resources on how different religions view
death, a book about bereavement among mentally challenged
individuals, and many resources for and about children
and adolescents.

Bibliographies
Annotated Bibliographies can be a good source for
finding resources to add to a lending library. Two you
should know about are:
A Resource List and Bibliography, from A Place to
Remember, 1996, $6.50. (See above for catalog
information.)
WiSSP Lending Library Annotated Bibliography, from
the Wisconsin Stillbirth Service Program. Free to
participating hospitals, $2.00 to all others.
